In topic this week we have been exploring Mexico! We have compared its environment and culture with our own. One of the key differences between the two countries we identified is the wildlife and animals. We chose an animal native to Mexico and used pencil and water colour to recreate the animal. We thought carefully about the colours and textures the animal has and thought carefully about how we could create these effects with different mediums.

In Maths meeting today we enjoyed playing a game which helped us draw upon our knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes. We took in turns feeling a shape hidden in a bag and answered questions until someone was able to guess what the shape was! We asked questions such as ‘Is the shape 2D or 3D?’ ‘How many corners does it have?’ ‘What are its faces?’ and ‘How many edges does it have?’ to help us learn what the shape was!

In PE today 1P recreated their own ‘sports day’ themed session. We really enjoyed competing in teams and completing fun activities such as; a bean bag toss, transporting the ball from one end of the playground to the other end over our heads and under our legs, an egg race and rolling the ball from one hoop to another hoop. We discovered the importance of working cooperatively in a team to ensure we were successful in completing each event. At the end of the session we nominated Suhani’s team (Suhani, Noah, Jack and Lily) to be our ‘Sports Stars’ as they listened to each other and were kind towards one another. And our individual ‘Sports Star’ was Noah as he was supportive towards his team mates and completed each event to the best of his ability whilst encouraging his team members!

We enjoyed trying different Chinese noodles and prawn crackers in topic! We tried and rated the following noodles and sauces; Hoisin, Black bean, Chow Mein and Sweet and Sour. We listened to Chinese music as we ate the different foods with chopsticks! We also learned different Chinese cuisine customs such as; the eldest person picks up their chopsticks first, you should take your shoes off before eating and tapping two fingers on the table symbolises your appreciation for the food! Have a look at us trying foods below!

In literacy today we created our own lullabies to calm and soothe Zeraffa the giraffe on her journey to Paris! We thought carefully about what we could see in the illustration of Zeraffa and Atir on the boat at night and how we ourselves feel protected , safe and loved ourselves at night time to inspire our writing. Miss Power was very impressed with our beautiful lullabies and how some of us included repetition to make our writing appear more lyrical! Have a read of some of our lullabies below:

This week’s Star writer is…Jacob Stanley and Caitlin Harper!

Jacob and Caitlin are both our Star writers this week! I was very impressed with their lullabies that they created in Literacy today. Both had thought carefully about their presentation, used descriptive language, and repeated certain phrases to make the lullaby appear lyrical. Well done Jacob and Caitlin! Keep up the super work!

Creating a free-verse poem

0

Posted by cpower | Posted in General News | Posted on 28-06-2017

In Literacy today we created our own class free-verse poem! We discussed how a free-verse poem means there is no set structure or rhythm but a poet still expresses their ideas and feelings. In pairs we became the characters ‘Atir’ and ‘Zeraffa’  imagining their voyage across the River Nile. After reading this segment from the story, in our pairs we focused on a key object described in the passage. We then created an imaginative and descriptive sentence together including adjectives or a simile. We combined all of our sentences to create one amazing class poem. We have realised we are a class of fantastic poets!

Have a read below!

Upon the Felucca

We saw the River Nile as big as a crocodile
as deep as a volcano

We have sailed past through the spiky green palm trees
as quick as lightening

Ladies offered us dates brown as the mud
sweet as honey

And pomegranates ruby pink with little seeds inside
as sour as a passion fruit

We were shocked when we sailed past the huge pyramids
that stood golden and dusty

The girls used prickly porcupine tails to brush their hair
their quills as pointy as needles

Farewell Zeraffa, sail safely!
